Education (Secondary Area)

Apart from being in possession of a first cycle degree obtained with at least Second Class (Honours) or Category II as indicated further below, applicants shall:

  1. submit a Police Good Conduct Certificate issued by the Commissioner of Police in terms of the Conduct Certificates Ordinance and
  2. not be included in the Register established under the Protection of Minors (Registration) Act .

Home Economics (Single Area)

In addition to the requirements for admission applicants shall be in possession of the following:

For Home Economics: a first cycle degree in Home Economics.The requirements listed in this paragraph may be fulfilled through presentation of qualifications the content of which is deemed to be comparable to said requirements by the University Admissions Board on the recommendation of the Faculty Admissions Committee.


Education (Secondary Area)

In cases where an applicant lacks essential knowledge in particular areas not covered in his/her first degree, the Faculty Board, on the recommendation of the Board of Studies, may require the applicant to follow and pass supplementary study-units at Level 4 or lower to which not more than 12 ECTS credits are assigned.

Applicants with a first cycle degree or a diploma who do not fully meet the requirements for admission specified above, shall be required to demonstrate the learning achieved through prior experience and certification through the evaluation procedures established by the University Policy for the Recognition and Accreditation of Prior Learning. The Board may then recommend to the University Admissions Board to either

  1. admit the applicant to the Course or
  2. admit the applicant to the Course subject to the successful completion of a Preparatory Programme as directed by the Board, comprising not more than 60 ECTS credits.

Students shall be required to:

  1. sit for a Maltese Aptitude Test - 'Test ta' Ħiliet fil-Malti' aptitude test at the beginning of the Course; provided that applicants in possession of a pass in Maltese at Intermediate or Advanced Matriculation Level at Grade C or higher, or qualifications deemed to be equivalent by the Faculty Board, shall be exempted from this requirement. Students who fail the Maltese aptitude test, shall be required to follow and successfully pass a proficiency course in Maltese approved by the Faculty Board before the end of the third semester of the Course. Students who do not satisfy the Maltese proficiency requirement by this period shall be required to interrupt their studies for up to a maximum of twelve months during which time they are expected to obtain this requirement. Students shall only be eligible to proceed with their studies if they comply with this requirement; and
  2. follow and successfully pass a proficiency course in English approved by the Faculty Board before the end of the third semester of the Course. Students who do not satisfy the English proficiency requirement by this period shall be required to interrupt their studies for up to a maximum of twelve months during which time they are expected to obtain this requirement. Students shall only be eligible to proceed with their studies if they comply with this requirement. Students who on admission into the Course are in possession of a pass in English at Intermediate or Advanced Matriculation Level at Grade C or higher, or qualifications deemed to be equivalent by the Faculty Board, shall be exempted from the English proficiency requirement.

Education (Secondary Area)

The Master in Teaching and Learning (MTL) is an entry-level qualification for becoming a teacher. By following this course, you will specialise in Pedagogical Content Knowledge (after having obtained a first-cycle degree at first-cycle level in Content Knowledge), in Educational Context Knowledge and in Educational Research and Inquiry. These are intrinsically related to the Field Placement in schools. Furthermore, the wider educational context will be included in the programme through Educational Themes and Creative Positive Learning Environments. The MTL bridges theory and practice thereby forming you into a reflective, inquiring and collegial professional educator. It promotes teaching and learning for democracy and social justice.

Education (Secondary Area)

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate the ability to transform content knowledge into pedagogical knowledge in a manner that addresses the needs of all students.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of the Curriculum, different aspects of the Learning and Teaching process and issues of Assessment, thus being in a position to provide positive experiences to all students in their educational journey,
  3. Design lessons, classroom activities etc. that put the well-being of students and their families at the heart of education.
  4. Recognise and value the powerful role that teachers have in influencing the lives of children, youths and their careers.
  5. Recognise and value the advocacy role that teachers have between the student and the educational institutions, their structures and policies.
  6. Demonstrate the ability to nurture and develop the relationship between teacher and students.
  7. Justify and defend that individual students need different support in their education process,
  8. Recognise the political role that education has for the State, and how this is reflected in policies and institutional structures,
  9. TTheorise about ‘becoming-teacher’ as an ongoing process of growth. Rather than seeing oneself as ‘being a teacher’, the focus is on the constant process of ‘becoming-teacher’. This implies that one is to reflect continuously about one’s own practices and the education institutions one is working in.
  10. Recognise and value that research is seen not only as production of knowledge but also part of the reflective process in becoming-teachers.

On completion of the MTL, you will be eligible to apply for a teacher's warrant and will be fully qualified to teach in schools and to start a career in a field related to education. The course will also lead you to further study in the field, should you wish to obtain a degree of specialisation in Education.
